Development & Planning
The Development & Planning Branch is dedicated to overseeing the planning and development process within Council, ensuring that all growth aligns with sustainability, livability, and regulatory requirements. This branch works with local, state, and federal legislation to ensure development projects contribute positively to the environment and meet the expectations of the community.
The team is responsible for assessing development applications in the Cairns region under the CairnsPlan 2016 planning scheme. This includes determining if proposed developments align with the area's regulations and are suitable for approval. The Development & Planning team also manages the approval process for high-risk developments, coordinates with external agencies, and offers support for pre-lodgement inquiries.
- Development Assessment: Review and assess development applications and planning proposals against benchmarks and requirements.
- Strategic Growth: Guide sustainable and long-term growth strategies in Cairns while considering environmental impacts.
- Infrastructure Coordination: Coordinate infrastructure requirements through agreements and policies to ensure growth is well-supported by necessary services.
- Appeals & Project Coordination: Manage complex projects and oversee appeal matters, ensuring that Council’s decisions are legally sound.
Placement in the Development & Planning team offers valuable hands-on experience for participants interested in shaping future infrastructure and urban growth. Participants will gain:
- Exposure to the full planning and development lifecycle, from application assessments to appeal management.
- Experience working with key stakeholders, including government agencies, developers, and the community.
- A deeper understanding of the planning process, legal frameworks, and how to contribute to creating livable, sustainable urban spaces.
