Apprenticeships
An Apprenticeship is a structured training arrangement usually of three to four years duration.
The training combines practical experience at work with complementary off-the-job training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Apprenticeships are full-time to achieve a Nationally-Recognised Qualification.
In addition to technical training, apprentices have access to professional development opportunities in areas such as leadership, communication, resilience, career planning, mental health and wellbeing.
The qualification you receive depends on the apprenticeship you undertake. Examples include:
- Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
- Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (Fitting and Machining)
- Certificate III in Plumbing.
All qualifications are nationally recognised.
The work varies depending on the apprenticeship, but apprentices can expect to:
- Operate vehicles, tools, plant and equipment
- Assist with maintenance, repairs and improvement projects
- Work alongside experienced tradespeople
- Follow workplace health and safety procedures
- Attend block training each year at the local TAFE campus
- Develop practical, job-ready skills in real-world environments
You'll contribute to essential services and infrastructure that support the Cairns community.
No. Council books in time for you to complete all your coursework during working hours, you may work on this in your free time if you would like to, however it is not required.

To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be at least 15 years of age
- Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or hold an eligible temporary residency visa
- Meet any additional requirements specific to the apprenticeship being advertised
- Not have completed an apprenticeship in the same trade previously (recommencements and part-completions may be considered)
Some apprenticeships may have additional requirements, such as Year 12 studies or specific subject prerequisites.
No previous industry experience is required. Council is looking for motivated individuals who are willing to learn, contribute to a team and develop their skills.

Remember, you don't need extensive experience. We're looking for enthusiastic, reliable candidates who are eager to learn and develop their skills.
