Council is replacing existing mechanical water meters with smart water meters throughout the Cairns region to improve the community’s water network and achieve overall water savings. These new meters will assist residents in identifying hidden water leaks early to minimise water wastage and help residents track and manage their water use.

This $24 million program is one of four focused actions identified under Council's Water Demand Management Strategy 2016-2025 to address water demand and provide water savings of 10% over a 10-year period.

In 2019, Council completed Phase 1 of the program which involved the installation of 697 smart water meters in Palm Cove and the development of approximately 50% of the associated communications network. Since the smart meters were installed, Council has identified over 120 leaks, saving approximately 50 megalitres of water. Phase 2 has been scheduled to commence in January 2023 and will involve the installation of approximately 55,000 smart water meters over the next 3-4 years.

The replacement program will commence in multiple locations across Cairns with residents and property owners being notified by mail before their water meter is scheduled to be replaced. Find up-to-date information on the next area scheduled to receive new smart meters.

It is expected the roll out of all smart water meters and the completion of the communication system including the customer portal will be installed by July 2026.
