The Information & Technologies Services (I&TS) team at Council applies innovation to Council’s business model, making use of current and emerging technologies to service and enhance interactions with our customers and employees. I&TS provide essential support and maintain key Technology Infrastructure in areas such as end user computing, network, cybersecurity, Data canter and cloud computing as well as maintain critical core Enterprise Systems with supporting software development and data analytics. Interns and volunteers can gain hands-on experience working with cutting-edge technology, troubleshooting technical issues, and supporting the digital transformation of services to improve community engagement and operational efficiency.
The Engineering team at Council is responsible for designing, planning, and overseeing the implementation of various infrastructure projects. They work across multiple disciplines, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineering, ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and meet regulatory standards. Work experience opportunities provide exposure to project management, technical design, problem-solving, and the practical application of engineering principles in real-world settings.
The Environmental team works across the entire Cairns region, focusing on preserving and managing local ecosystems through a variety of key initiatives. Responsibilities include managing pest plants and animals, land rehabilitation, native wildlife conservation, fire risk management, and mosquito control. The team engages in tasks such as natural area and weed management, animal surveillance and trapping, community planting events, and providing assistance to landholders. They also conduct compliance inspections, planned burns, and mosquito management to reduce risks and protect the environment. This program offers valuable hands-on experience in environmental conservation and management while contributing to the preservation of the region’s natural heritage.
The Development & Planning branch is dedicated to overseeing the planning and development process in Cairns, ensuring that all growth aligns with sustainability, livability, and regulatory requirements. This branch works with local, state, and federal legislation to ensure development projects contribute positively to the environment and meet the expectations of the community.
