Sound and lighting will be used from early tomorrow morning to deter flying foxes from roosting in trees next to the Esplanade Lagoon. This will allow us to safely clean and trim the trees and their surrounds and will hopefully prevent flying foxes from making a permanent home there. http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/council/news-publications/media-releases/releases/flying-fox-deterrent
Exciting news! The site of the soon-to-be-built Cairns Performing Arts Centre has been officially handed over to principal contractor The FKG Group. A large branch has come down on the Red Arrow track, which means we need to close it for a few hours so a crew can get up there and clear it. Sorry for the inconvenience. The track should reopen later today.
Our very own Cairns Esplanade will host the Asia-Pacific's best beach volleyballers in June, when teams from eight countries will battle it out for a place in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Mayor Bob Manning met with Volleyball Australia CEO Mat Meriaux, Continental Cup Operations Director Baz Wedmaier and local players Giulia Alzona and Karen Peacock this morning for the big announcement. http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/council/news-publications/media-releases/releases/beach-volleyball

Cr Linda Cooper and Kamerunga residents have welcomed the completion of an off-road path along Stoney Creek Road. Residents have campaigned for this path for a decade but steep terrain made the project difficult. The end result = an engineering feat that includes cantilevering the path above the cliff-like embankment. http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/council/news-publications/media-releases/releases/stoney-creek-path

Full details: http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/whats-on/whats-on/events/m16mulch
Several beaches are currently closed due to strong winds. Hopefully Trinity Beach, Clifton Beach and Holloways Beach nets will go back into the water today. Today's stinger risk is moderate.

No one thinks their dog would hurt anyone, but more than 120 people in Cairns are injured each year by dogs. You can do your bit by having a secure yard; always walking your dog on a leash; and have voice or hand control of your pooch.
