Just 7 more sleeps until the one and only Sir Elton John brings his Once in a Lifetime show to Cairns! If you're lucky enough to have scored a ticket, be sure to plan your trip to Cazalys ahead of time. We'll have a free park-and-ride shuttle from the showgrounds and a free bus service from Lake St. Be aware of road closures and changed traffic conditions around the stadium and avoid driving in the area if you can. http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/council/news-publications/public-notices/notices/sir-elton-john-road-closures
The 100th anniversary of the Battle of Polygon Wood will be commemorated with a special service at the Cairns War Cemetery this Sunday at 9am. It is part of the ongoing Centenary of Anzac, commemorating the events of World War I. All are invited to attend.
Yorkeys Knob beach will be closed tomorrow (Friday) for beach profiling works. Machinery will be used to smooth out the sand so that it is safer and more accessible. We apologise for any inconvenience.
A heads-up that there won't be any Committee Meeting held tomorrow (Wed 20/9). The next meeting of Council will be next week's Ordinary Meeting at 9am on Wednesday 27 September in the Council Chambers. All members of the public are welcome to attend.
Wow - what a huge turnout at the Cairns Unconvention this morning! It's great to see so many people all eager to hear from top Aussie entrepreneurs including Michelle Bridges (on stage now), Jack Delosa founder and CEO of The Entourage, and Alex Tomic and Nik Mirkovic co-founders of the multi-million dollar business HiSmile. Big thanks The Entourage for bringing this inspirational event to Cairns. We're proud to be the first ever regional city in Australia to host The Unconvention!
Are you going to Sir Elton John's concert at Cazalys? It's going to be a massive event - among the biggest ever in Cairns. We're providing free bus transfers from Lake St and a park & ride service from the Cairns Showgrounds to make getting there easier. http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/council/news-publications/media-releases/releases/elton-john-transport
It might be dry outside, but your garden will survive on less water than you think. Check your sprinkler times and find out how much water your plants really need. Visit thrive.cairns.qld.gov.au to give it a go.
Bat Chats are back these school holidays! Come on down on any of the next three Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings to learn more about our native flying foxes.
A helicopter will transport materials and equipment to Mount Whitfield this Thursday and Friday 14-15 September, as part of the construction of the Yellow Arrow walking track. As a result, to ensure public safety, access to existing walking tracks and cycle paths will be restricted as follows: - No access between the Blue Arrow and Red Arrow tracks. - Access to Blue Arrow will be available via Green Arrow only. - The cycle path will be closed from Tanks Carpark (Collins Ave) to Quarry St, with a detour via Sheridan St. Thanks for your patience and cooperation and sorry for any inconvenience.
Australian Reading Hour is on this Thursday, so there's no better time to get reacquainted with a good book. Better still, come along to one of our Cairns Libraries branches and join in the fun! 📚📖 http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/council/news-publications/media-releases/releases/reading-hour
Thanks to everyone who entered our competition to win VIP tickets to The Cairns Unconvention. We've now notified the four lucky winners - congratulations. The event is going to be huge! All general admission tickets have been snapped up, with only a limited number of VIP tickets still available for purchase http://bit.ly/2eZyWSV
We'll be doing some weed removal around Freshwater Lake at Centenary Lakes on Tuesday 12 September. To do this, we need to close one of the access paths (see map below). It's all part of making sure the precinct is healthy and enjoyable for all! Apologies for any inconvenience and thanks for your cooperation.
There is some artistic flair happening in the Gordon Creek underpass! Artists Malachi Aird and India Collins (pictured with Cr Cathy Zeiger) have been busy adding some colour to the new cycle link. It's still a work in progress so we look forward to bringing you pics of the finished product :)
Congratulations to Tayla Gunton (running) and Wade Mundie (BMX), recipients of the 2017 North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF) PAYCE Bursary. The talented athletes received their bursary and a commemorative jacket from Cr Jessie Richardson at Council today. There is still time to nominate an athlete for the 2017 NQ Sports Awards. Entries must be submitted to Council by September 9.
We've had a few marine flares show up in household rubbish lately. These are classified as explosives and should never be put in your bin. They can instead be dropped off to your nearest Coast Guard or Volunteer Marine Rescue headquarters or to the Qld Maritime Safety offices. Want to know what can go into your bins and what can be dropped off at transfer stations?
