Stage Mentorship program

Throughout the year, Council offers opportunities for aspiring stage professionals to observe the workings of major theatre and festival events as well as getting hands-on experience working alongside the technical professionals and coordinators in the Creative Life team.

Workshops and events are held throughout the year.


Stage partnerships

Through our Stage Partnerships program, Council seeks to support local performing arts and community organisations to develop new theatre and performance works that tell our unique stories.

In-kind support offered by Council can include:

  • Venue hire for creative development and rehearsal time
  • Creative feedback and support
  • Promotion and presentation of the final product
  • Connections with industry for future development and tours of the work

The Creative Life team supports all kinds of work that can be performed in both tradition theatre settings and outdoor or festival settings.

Flame.Stage Technical Mentorship Program

The Flame.Stage Technical Program brings together a team of tech savvy creatives keen to establish themselves as Cairns Regional Councils "next gen techs" working behind the scenes on Council's program of annual theatre productions, events & festivals.

A small group of emerging Technicians will be selected for this amazing opportunity to work with and be mentored by our dedicated team of professionals in technical production throughout the year.

Applications open in March.

Eligibility criteria for the Flame.Stage Technical Mentorship

You must be:

  • Be aged 12-25
  • Have some experience and/or training in technical event production
  • Be able to commit to two workshops and to working at events in Cairns, weekends & after-hours between May – November.
  • Under the new Queensland Government measures linked to vaccination status, applicants over the age of 16 are required to provide suitable evidence of COVID-19 double-vaccination.

New Work for Little Peeps

Expressions of Interest open in August 2023.

New Work for Little Peeps supports local artists to develop new theatre and performative works to feature at the annual Cairns Children’s Festival.

We're looking for new works that encourage imagination, allow children to experience stories in new and innovative ways and help to develop enduring relationships with performing arts spaces.

To support new work for Cairns Children's Festival, Council will:

  • Provide assistance with identifying and applying for funding to assist you to create new work and run creative developments
  • Provide a rehearsal space
  • Provide a duty technician, sound technician and lighting technician, capped at 36 hours, during rehearsal week
  • Access to a 4-bedroom residency house,  at 5 Collins Avenue, Edge Hill, if required
  • Fund a creative producer, financially negotiated by Cultural Services and chosen in collaboration with Cultural Services, for one-week creative development
  • Link you to industry leaders to assist with creative and professional development
  • Coordinate a photo shoot and marketing support to develop a show Electronic Press Kit (EPK).
  • Offer Cultural Services creative team feedback

Expression of interested for this program will open in August 2023 for the 2024 Cairns Children’s Festival program.
