More than $1.5 million worth of new water meters will be installed across Cairns over the next year.

Driven by population growth and building activity, Council expects to install 750 new meters, which will be compatible with the Phase 2 rollout of Council’s Smart Water Meter (SWM) project.

The new 20mm meters, which are used for most residential applications, will be Itron Ultrasonic Meters, which can be equipped with endpoints required by the Smart Water Meter project.

Larger, new meters sizes (25mm, 40mm, 80mm, 100mm and 150mm) will also be chosen to be compatible with the SWM project.

Local suppliers will be used for the purchase of materials and machinery hire wherever possible.

The project complements the expected rollout of more than 5,000 smart water meters over the next year.
