Stay informed - flooding Barron, Mulgrave and Russell rivers

This warning is from the Cairns Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG)

There is a chance of localised flooding throughout Thursday (14 December) with rainfall totals of up to 300mm in 6 hours forecast throughout the Mulgrave, Russell and Barron catchments.

River levels can rise quickly. Residents should stay informed via the Cairns Disaster Dashboard, https://disaster.cairns.qld.gov.au/

Barron River

A minor flood warning is in place for the Barron River at Kamerunga Bridge. River levels may reach around 6 metres Thursday afternoon, with minor flooding. Higher levels are possible with further rainfall.

The Barron River at Cairns Airport is currently at 2.78 metres and rising, which is above the minor flood level (2.50 m). The Barron River at Cairns Airport may reach the moderate flood level (3.00 m), around the high tide. Higher levels are possible with further rainfall.

Mulgrave River

A moderate flood warning is in place for the Mulgrave River. Minor flooding is occurring at The Fisheries.

Peets Bridge is under water and is likely to remain impassable for the remainder of the day.

The Mulgrave River at Gordonvale is 11.50 meters and steady but may reach minor flood level (12m) later today and rise to 14 metres this evening.

Russell River

Elevated river and creek levels are occurring within the Russell River catchment.

If it’s flooded, forget it

Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. Flood waters may be covering damage to roads and other surfaces. Flood waters can also contain hidden debris and contamination.

What you should do

  • Stay informed because conditions could change quickly:
    • Go to the Cairns Disaster Dashboard for all warnings: www.disaster.cairns.qld.gov.au
    • Listen to ABC Far North at 801AM, 95.5FM or 106.7FM.
    • Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
    • Decide what you will do if flooding starts.
    • Find out how to get ready for a flood at qfes.qld.gov.au/prepare/flooding.
    • If flooding starts, do not drive unless you have to.
