Council will seek $750,000 in Federal Government funding to support development of a masterplan for the proposed Major Events Precinct (Showgrounds, Barlow Park and surrounds).

In September 2022, Council endorsed the Major Events Precinct Vision and Development Opportunities Report, which outlined a strategic approach to evolving Barlow Park and the Cairns Showgrounds site into a premier regional sporting and events precinct.

The report set out principles to guide development of the precinct in a financially responsible and ordered way, while recognising the site’s untapped potential.

The proposed masterplan will guide the strategic vision for Major Events Precinct and inform decision making and long-term planning, facilitate engagement with land users and stakeholders, provide confidence around investment and budget decisions, define Council responsibilities, and leverage funding opportunities.

Council will apply for grant funding from the Australian Government’s $400 million regional Precincts and Partnerships Program.
