Testing of Greenpatch flood warning station

MEDIA RELEASE

Published: 30th November 2023. (Note: information was correct at date of publication but may have since been changed or superseded.)

Council will conduct live testing of the Greenpatch flood warning station on Wednesday 6 December between 10am and midday.

The test will begin with a voice recording lasting about 25 seconds, followed by a siren tone lasting about 30 seconds.

This is a test only. Residents and visitors in the area do not need to take any action.

Family pets should be secured to ensure they do not escape their yard during the test.

The Greenpatch campground in Gordonvale is on the Mulgrave River floodplain and prone to flash flooding during the annual wet season.

The warning system ensures there is sufficient time for evacuation of the campground before floodwaters start to enter the lower areas of the site.

Council tests the station every year in the lead up to the wet season to check the reliability of the system and to raise awareness within the community about what to expect in an evacuation.

From Tuesday 5 December 2023, Council will be closing the lower section of the campground for the wet season.

The higher section will remain open until flooding is imminent.

Residents can stay informed this wet season at the Cairns Disaster Dashboard, which provides updates on road conditions, power outages, weather warnings, flood cameras and other emergency information.
