Disaster Management Unit

Cairns Regional Council's Disaster Management Unit provides administrative, financial and operational support to:

  • The Local Disaster Management Group - Cairns Region (LDMG)
  • The Local Disaster Coordination Centre
  • The Queensland State Emergency Service (SES)

Throughout the year, the Unit undertakes a range of projects aimed at prevention, preparation, response and recovery from disasters for the Cairns Local Government Area.

Staff from the Disaster Management Unit are working directly with communities to help support their capability during disasters.

If you would like an officer to discuss preparedness with your community group or organisation, contact the unit on 1300 69 22 47 or email cairnsdisastermanagement@cairns.qld.gov.au.

Local Disaster Management Group - Cairns Region

The Local Disaster Management Group – Cairns Region (LDMG-CR) meets regularly to coordinate and develop strategies to help mitigate the effects of disasters on communities and be prepared to respond when disasters occur.

The Group’s membership is made up a range of agencies including (but not limited to):

  • Cairns Regional Council
  • Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service
  • Ports North
  • Ergon Energy
  • Queensland Ambulance Service

United Nations Making Cities Resilient 2030

Cairns is a role model city in the United Nations Making Cities Resilient Campaign.

This means we are a local government which has political and technical commitment to take action to address disaster and climate risks, helping ensure resilience and sustainable development.

We meet certain criteria such as having disaster risk reduction and resilience as a focus, engaging diverse stakeholders in this process and demonstrating continuous improvement through the 10 Essentials for Making Cities Resilient.

Cairns uses the UNDRR’s Resilience Scorecard to make this assessment.
