How to apply
All applications must be submitted online. Simply click on Current Vacancies, find the position that interests you and follow the prompts. You will need to submit a separate application for each position you are interested in. All online applications should reach us by midnight on the advertised closing date.

Application consent details
You may choose to give your consent to be considered for other similar positions within Council over the next 3 months. However, giving this consent does not automatically mean that your application will be considered for all positions at Council. A separate application must be submitted for each vacancy.
When you can expect to hear from us
After applying online you will receive an immediate acknowledgement that your application has been received. Applicants will generally be notified of the initial outcome of their application within two weeks of the applications closing date.
Late applications will be accepted at the discretion of the selection panel.
If you are shortlisted for an interview
You will be contacted by the Chair of the selection panel if you are selected for interview. You must bring along any original certificates or licenses that are required of the position for verification by the selection panel.
Referee checks are carried out post-interview for the selection panel's recommended candidate.
Assessment of skills/ability to perform tasks
In some instances Council may require you to undertake a practical assessment to demonstrate your skills and ability to perform the tasks of the position and/or a pre-employment medical assessment.
All new employees to Cairns Regional Council have to undergo a pre-employment medical including a drug and alcohol test. Where the preferred candidate has passed the pre-employment medical, a formal offer of employment will be made.
Where the preferred candidate has not passed the pre-employment medical, Human Resources will consult with OH&S to determine if reasonable adjustments can be made to accommodate the preferred candidate. If reasonable adjustments can be made, a formal offer of employment will be made. Where reasonable adjustments cannot be made or the preferred candidate has failed the pre-employment medical, the candidate will be advised and no offer of employment will be made.

Census employment register
The 2016 Census of Population and Housing will be conducted on Tuesday 9 August 2016. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has opened a Census Employment Register of Interest for candidates to register a general expression of interest in employment opportunities for the 2016 Census. The ABS will notify registered candidates when the application period for vacancies in the Cairns area begins. (Note: Cairns Regional Council has no involvement in Census employment; recruitment and selection for all Census roles is the sole responsibility of the ABS. Any queries about Census employment should be directed to the ABS.)
