Tropic Wings Electric Coach Fleet
Cairns leads Australia with first all-electric tour coach fleet
Australia’s first all-electric tour coach fleet is reducing emissions and setting a global benchmark. Tropic Wings Cairns Tours & Charters, part of The CaPTA Group, has transitioned 35% of its fleet to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with plans to reach 80% by 2030.
This $11.2 million investment, by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), positions the Cairns-based company at the forefront of green transport solutions. With 13 electric coaches, 11 depot charging stations, and a soon-to-be-installed 215kW battery system, Tropic Wings is revolutionising how tourism operators think about energy, efficiency and the customer experience.
Additionally, this project offers operational savings by reducing fleet repairs and servicing, as BEVs have fewer moving parts and do not require oil.
From Rainforestation to region-wide transition
What began in 2018 as a solution to noisy diesel buses idling at Kuranda’s Rainforestation Nature Park, has evolved into a region-wide shift toward clean energy. Early results and positive customer feedback prompted further investment and installations, which was made possible through support from ARENA, Energy Australia, and local partners like Babinda Electrics.
With a 400km range and near-silent operation, these electric buses have already improved the tourism experience, especially in nature-based settings. A quieter, fume-free ride is now a key differentiator for Tropic Wings’ tours.
“Tropic Wings is revolutionising sustainable transport and tourism by launching the first and only electric vehicle fleet in the Southern Hemisphere. This project reduces our carbon footprint while enhancing guest experience—and serves as a blueprint for operators worldwide.”

Making clean energy work harder
To maximise its solar-powered infrastructure, Tropic Wings is installing a 215kW battery energy storage system, capable of charging up to three buses overnight using stored daytime solar. This system will reduce dependence on the grid and build resilience in case of outages.
The next stage includes additional charging capacity at the Rainforestation Nature Park in Kuranda, enabling longer-range electric tours and supporting future fleet expansion.
“We now run the largest electric tour fleet in the country. We started with one electric bus back in 2018, now we have 13 and we’re not stopping.”
