Join a fun and beginner-friendly “Learn to Play Chess” session led by members of the Cairns Chess Club. This hands-on workshop is perfect for children and young people who want to get started with chess, from absolute basics to simple opening strategies and smart moves that actually make you think a few steps ahead.

You’ll learn the rules, how the pieces move, and the foundations of strategy in a relaxed, supportive environment—no experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to play. By the end, you’ll be ready to jump into real games with confidence (and maybe even start plotting your checkmate celebrations early).
