Cairns Festival set to dazzle.

Get ready to be dazzled and swept off your feet as Cairns Festival 2023 sets tropical north Queensland ablaze with an extraordinary 10-day celebration of art, culture, and sheer spectacle! Today, at 10 am, festival organisers unveil the second line up mind-blowing highlights that will leave attendees breathless from August 25th to September 3rd.

Music:

  • Indie-rock royalty, The Jungle Giants, and Brisbane's sensational indie-pop four-piece, Cub Sport, will transport audiences into a world of pure magic and musical brilliance. Catch their captivating performances at Munro Martin Parklands on September 2nd and Tanks Arts Centre on August 31st.
  • Immerse yourself in the pulsating beats and interactive experience of the World Premiere event Hot & Heavy by The Ironing Maidens. This sensational dance party at Tanks Arts Centre on August 25th and 27th will transport attendees to a queer new world where domesticity is transformed.

Events:

  • Don't miss the flamboyance of full-sized flamingos parading through the city! Flamingos, presented by Dead Puppet Society, will mesmerise with vibrant colours and awe-inspiring puppetry skills from August 25th to 27th on the Esplanade and at Court House Gallery.
  • Experience the humbling String Symphony by Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, a large-scale, interactive performance installation exploring connection, community, and collaboration. Witness Leon, a giant marionette illuminated by 600 LED lights, come to life through the efforts of 10 community volunteers. Free shows at Lagoon Plaza from August 25th to 28th.

Exhibitions:

  • Explore three free exhibitions across the Cairns Festival program. ENERGY exhibition showcases the best young and emerging student artists from the Far North Queensland region at Tanks Arts Centre from August 30th to September 3rd. Court House Gallery presents How We Relate by Yalanji Arts, showcasing textiles and free-form ceramics, and Thomas Chen's exploration of creativity and identity in an extension of myself. Both exhibitions run until September 3rd.

Theatre:

  • Step back in time and revel in the nostalgic charm of Bolster & Lee by Knock 'Em Down Theatre at Court House Gallery's Front Lawn from August 25th to September 3rd. This visually engaging carnival tent offers fun, games, and unexpected surprises, reminiscent of side shows of old.
  • JUTE Theatre company debuts the furiously funny dramatic comedy Higher Faster Louder from August 25th to September 2nd at Bulmba-ja. This is the inspirational tale of Marilyn Marsh Booth, one of the world’s first female pilots, navigating aviation during the 1960s.

Film:

Immerse yourself in a tale of friendship and adventure at Moving Picture Night, featuring the film Blueback on September 1st at Norman Park in Gordonvale. This free, family-friendly event includes music and the heart-warming Australian drama based on Tim Winton's beloved novel.
