Bring your people. Find your patch of grass. Cairns Festival is back and in 2026 we’re giving you 10 days, 10 ways to get amongst it. WANDER, GATHER, IMAGINE, LAUGH, PLAY, ESCAPE, HONOUR, DISCOVER, DANCE and CONNECT your way through a festival that refuses to sit still.
Welcome to GATHER. From Friday 28 August to Sunday 6 September, this is your official excuse to round up the crew, follow the noise and stay out longer than planned. There’ll be street parties, parades, live music, family fun, market madness and plenty of tropical festival chaos. Someone will know someone in the parade. Someone will be “just checking out the food trucks”. No one is leaving early.
Let’s Have Some Fun In The Sun At The Grand Parade
Cairns’ biggest street party kicks the whole thing off and honestly, subtlety was never the brief. The iconic “Fun in the Sun” Grand Parade returns as part of Cairns’ 150 years celebrations, with a vibrant new twist. Expect reef and rainforest energy, sun-soaked nostalgia and plenty of community pride as the city celebrates the people, stories and spirit that have shaped Cairns, while looking ahead to what comes next. Pack a picnic rug. Bring your loudest cheer. Wave at someone you know. Wave at someone you don’t. It is a parade. That is basically the law. At 7.30pm, the night explodes into a fireworks spectacular over the water.

Get Hands On With VOICES By Pulsing Heart
Another place to gather is VOICES by Pulsing Heart on the Esplanade’s Eastern Event Lawn. This interactive light and sound sculpture is made from 50 translucent spinning tubes. As each tube spins, a voice fades in. The more people join in, the more the light and choir build, until the full soundscape rises around you. It is playful. It is immersive. It is designed for all ages and abilities. And with up to 100 people able to take part at once, it is less “please stand quietly in a line” and more “get in here, this needs everyone.” VOICES runs throughout the festival.

After Dark Art And Market Madness at Tanks Arts Centre
Over at Tanks Arts Centre, GATHER gets a little after-dark, a little louder and a little harder to leave. The Tanks Twilight Markets, Cairns Festival Edition, takes over the precinct with art, music, food, bars, DJs, mini golf and plenty of market madness. Wander through Off The Wall Art Sale, step into the oversized magazine world of Catch of the Day, grab a bite on the promenade, then somehow find yourself in the Fever Lounge with a drink in hand and no real plan to go home. Tank 5 keeps the energy up with live music and entertainment, including a headline performance by Steel Syndicate.

Carnival On Collins Brings The Big Family Finale
Carnival on Collins brings Cairns Festival home with one big, colourful, family-friendly finale. On Sunday 6 September, Collins Avenue turns into a leafy street party under the canopy of the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, with more than 200 market stalls, local eats, live music, roving performers and surprises for all ages. Bring the kids. Bring Dad. Bring the whole crew. Wander, snack, dance, browse, laugh and let the day unfold. One minute you’re watching the entertainment, the next you’re buying a plant you didn’t know you needed, lining up for something delicious and pretending this was always the Father’s Day plan.

That is the beauty of GATHER. Cairns Festival is not just about attending an event. It is about being part of the city while the city celebrates itself. It is the cheer from the parade crowd. The gasp before the fireworks. The shared laughter at a roving performer. The sound of 50 voices building through a sculpture because 100 strangers decided to play together. The music drifting through Tanks. The smell of food on Collins Avenue. The friend who disappears for five minutes and returns with dumplings.
