WANDER: FOLLOW THE LIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SLIGHTLY UNHINGED GIANT EYEBALL

Wander

Some festivals ask you to make a plan. Cairns Festival is more of a “start walking and see what magic finds you” kind of situation and this year, we’re giving you 10 days, 10 ways to experience it all. WANDER, GATHER, IMAGINE, LAUGH, PLAY, ESCAPE, HONOUR, DISCOVER, DANCE and CONNECT your way through a festival that refuses to sit still.

First up? WANDER. Explore the city to discover unexpected moments and lose yourself in a space transformed. No clipboard required. No military-grade itinerary. Just comfortable shoes, a curious mind and maybe someone in the group who knows where the snacks are. Let’s go.

Follow The Lights, Find The Magic At The Esplanade

Canvas of Cairns delivers a glowing, immersive transformation of one of the city’s most familiar spaces. The lagoon, sculptures, trees, pathways and lawns will be reimagined through laser, light, smoke and projection. Cycles is the masterpiece at the centre, a nightly display where a vast curtain of water rises into the night over the lagoon, catching light, movement and fleeting forms as they appear, dissolve and shift again.

When: Canvas of Cairns - 6.30pm to 10pm. Cycles Lagoon Show – 7pm, 8pm, 9pm.
Friday 28 August to Sunday 6 September
Where: Esplanade Lagoon Precinct.

Someone Is Watching You, The Giant Cosmic Eye

Yes, a giant cosmic eye. O’ the Observer will be roaming the festival crowds, watching and recording the wonders unfold and playing them back in real time. One minute you are watching the festival. The next minute the festival is watching you. Normal? Not really. Excellent? Absolutely.

Where: Esplanade Lagoon Precinct.

Main Stage For The Music And The Magic

If your wandering leads you toward the Esplanade Main Stage, expect things to escalate quickly. For 10 nights, this becomes a free festival playground of music, performance, dancing, storytelling and glorious genre confusion. One night you might find yourself sinking into First Nations sounds and powerful stories. Another night, you could be line dancing at a Hoe Down, settling in for SKA-B-Q with barbecue and big tunes, or watching Lack of Judgement Day, an offbeat cowboy sci-fi live music cinema fever dream that refuses to sit neatly in one box. Good. Boxes are overrated.

When: Friday 28 August to Sunday 6 September
Where: Esplanade Lagoon Precinct.
