Quarter Street

Quarter Street brings the grit, soul, and fire of 1970s New York salsa to the heart of Melbourne. Rooted in the golden era of salsa dura, this 10-piece powerhouse revives the raw, analog sound made famous by Fania Records legends like Eddie Palmieri, Héctor Lavoe, and Ray Barretto—no fluff, no filters, just serious heat.

Formed in 2011 by percussionist Luis Poblete and timbalero Cristian Saavedra, Quarter Street was born from a deep love for the classic Nuyorican sound. With Sergio Botero’s street-hardened vocals, César Saavedra on baby bass, and Andrew James on piano, they locked in a tight rhythm section, then added an all-brass frontline led by Cuban trumpet ace Lazaro Numa alongside Ben Gillespie and Jimmy Bowman. Together, they created a sound that hits hard and grooves deep.

Quarter Street isn’t a throwback—they’re a next-gen movement. As second-generation Latin Americans raised on their parents’ records, they carry the culture forward with pride and power.

Whether on stage or wax, Quarter Street delivers the real deal: no gloss, no gimmicks—just heavy, old-school salsa that hits you in the chest and pulls you to the dance floor.
