Venues for events can be either:
- Council owned; or
- Privately owned.
Council provides a range of venues and public spaces suitable for meetings, weddings, ceremonies and events from birthday parties to corporate functions and even community festivals. Prior permission is generally needed to use our venues.
- Council owned and managed venues (The Esplanade, Tanks Arts Centre, Barlow Park, Cairns Botanic Gardens, Sugarworld Parklands, public libraries, some community halls)
- Council owned but leased (eg Cairns Showgrounds, Petersen Park, some community halls, public swimming pools)
- Public spaces (local parks, beaches, foreshores)
Note: Terms and conditions apply for use of each public space. You may be required to pay fees and charges, hold insurance and comply with other conditions including but not limited to vehicle access, safety and security, cleaning and waste removal, noise levels and noise restrictions, public notifications, food and liquor licensing, filming and photography etc.
A good place to start with finding suitable private / commercial venues for business events or major and regional events is the Tourism Tropical North Queensland website.
Don’t forget, if your event is likely to change normal operations around a neighbourhood (such as excess noise, increased parking), you must conduct sufficient community consultation (for example: letterbox drop, advertising, community meeting etc,). Most neighbours are happy to put up with a few changes if they are consulted before-hand. Don’t forget to include both businesses and residential addresses. This should be undertaken a minimum of two weeks prior to the event.
