Tree removal notification (Sheridan St)

  • Suburb: Cairns city
  • Work period (anticipated): 15/07/2020 to 07/08/2020
  • Description: Tree removals required on Sheridan St
  • Status: Open

Removal of five (5) street trees (Syzygium bamagense) on the western side of Sheridan St (between Spence St and Hartley St ( PDF, 0.31 MB )) is recommended as they are damaging infrastructure and they have outgrown their available space. Their surface root systems are also causing trip hazards.

The available space that these trees have been planted into only suits small species and these trees, that can grow to 45 metres, have outgrown the area. Damage to the footpath has been repaired but it is not possible to repair concrete sections that roots have lifted at least 100mm above the kerb and channel. This species develop large buttress roots and these can be seen bunching up in the small areas of natural ground creating trip hazards. Future damage to surrounding infrastructure is eminent.

Replacement plantings of either Snow wood (Parachidendron pruninosum), Sim's Wattle (Acacia simsii) or Little Euodia (Melicope rubra) will be undertaken to offset these necessary removals.
