Holloways Beach sand nourishment program

  • Suburb: Holloways Beach
  • Work period (anticipated): 30/11/2020 to 30/01/2021
  • Description: Sand nourishment works starting in December 2020
  • Likely impacts: Noise
  • Status: Open

Sand nourishment works for Holloways Beach are expected to start during December 2020.

The first stage of works will involve the contractor, Hall Contracting, moving equipment and materials onsite and the placement of pipes at the top of the beach. Pipes will be laid along the full length of the beach however, where practical, the pipes will be concealed and/or buried at designated pedestrian access points to ensure the safety of beach users. Site establishment is expected to get underway during the week of 30 November 2020.

Sand will then be dredged from the mouth of Richter's Creek at the northern end of the beach and pumped through the pipe to the existing rock wall and groyne areas at the southern end of the beach where machinery will spread the sand. Sand nourishment will occur in various areas of the beach, extending approximately from the Poinsettia St / Casuarina St junction in the north, down to the rockwall at the southern end.

During this time, residents can expect partial beach closures and some minor disruptions to traffic and car parking areas however contractors will attempt to keep these disruptions to a minimum.

It is expected that this sand replenishment program will be complete by January 2021, with a short works shut-down period over the Christmas / New Year period.

Council thanks you for your patience and cooperation during the works program. For additional information, please email feedback@cairns.qld.gov.au.
