The first stage of the Griffiths Park lighting upgrade project is expected to be completed early 2021. Further upgrade works are expected to be undertaken in 2021.

A multi-million dollar lighting upgrade will be undertaken in Griffiths Park, Manunda. This will allow cricket and AFL matches to be played under lights.

The two Griffiths Park ovals are the home of the Cairns Cricket Association, United Cricket Club, Norths Cricket Club and Cairns Saints AFL.

As part of the Griffiths Park Strategic Plan, field 1 (adjacent to Sportsworld) will be installed with lighting suitable to hold high-level cricket matches at night, and providing additional training and match time for AFL and other community sporting organisations.

The $2.27 million upgrade will involve the erection of four new light towers, about 41 metres in height, to provide 500 lux lighting for the infield and 300 lux to the outfield. As part of the works, the existing lighting will be removed.

Lighting contract works are expected to start in July 2020 and be completed by December 2020, weather permitting. Works will be undertaken Mondays to Fridays 7am to 5pm however some works may be required on Saturdays. Construction impacts will be monitored and minimised wherever possible.

The next stage of the Griffiths Park Strategic Plan will include service roads, car parking, a plaza entry, cricket practice wickets and shed, landscaping and connection pathways. This stage is expected to be undertaken in 2021. View the concept plan ( PDF, 3.93 MB ) for details.

The Griffiths Park strategic plan can also be viewed below. Lighting will be similar to the Walker Rd sport and recreation precinct, as shown in the below photograph.

The Queensland Government provided $1 million to Council to upgrade lighting and construct pathways, activity spaces and parking to support multi-sport and active recreation at Griffiths Park to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities.
