Tree removal - French St, Palm Cove

  • Suburb: Palm Cove
  • Work period (anticipated): 27/01/2020 to 01/01/2020
  • Description: Removal of a diseased tree due to public safety risk
  • Likely impacts: Noise; Dust; Property Access; Traffic Control; Road Closure
  • Location: French Street
  • Status: Open

A large Melaleuca tree in French Street, Palm Cove, is recommended for removal. This tree, situated between the Reef House and Villa Paradiso, is diseased with no potential for recovery or improvement.

This tree is classified as significant and it has been monitored for 15 years, with regular density scanning, investigation and reporting taking place since 2005. Over these years, the tree has been able to be managed by pruning to reduce the weight of the canopy. In the past two years however, the fungal infection has escalated and the hollowing and decay of the tree now presents too great a risk to public safety from potential structural failure. Methods used in the past to preserve the tree can no longer be used because further canopy pruning may affect the structural integrity of the tree.

Removal of the tree is therefore recommended, with the site replanted with the same species.

At this stage, removal is expected to be programmed to occur in February 2020 after a two week notification period. During removal, a qualified spotter/catcher will be onsite to attend to wildlife relocation as required and Ant Plants within the tree will be removed for relocation.

Removal works are estimated to take one day. During this time, temporary road closures of French Street and Williams Esplanade will be required. Pedestrian detours, noise and dust will also be unavoidable and some car parks will be temporarily closed. Every effort will be made to reduce these disruptions and we thank you for your patience and cooperation.
