Council recognises the value of this tree and will be undertaking an intensive treatment program to try to save it.
Remedial works will be underway in September 2019. Pedestrian detours and lane closures will be in place during this time.
Secondary inspections in February 2020 will determine whether the treatment has been successful.
The large fig tree located on the corner of Collins Avenue and McCormack Street in Edge Hill, outside the Botanic Gardens, is infected with a pathogenic fungus (Phellinus noxius).
This disease colonises roots and degrades root tissue cutting off water and nutrient flow. Above ground symptoms are usually not seen until extensive root damage has occurred. Thinning and wilting of its leaves is another indicator of the entire root system affected by the disease.
Experimental treatments are being carried out to treat this disease.
If this treatment fails, removal of the tree may be unavoidable.
