Changed traffic conditions - Varley St

  • Suburb: Yorkeys Knob
  • Work period (anticipated): 01/10/2017 to 30/04/2018
  • Description: The speed limit is being reduced along Varley Street.
  • Location: Varley Street
  • Status: Closed

The speed limit on Varley Street will be reduced to 50km/h from 2 April 2018.

The 50km/h zone will extend from the entry into the suburb, at the first entry welcome sign, to Sims Esplanade.

This change has been recommended by the Road Safety Traffic and Transport Advisory Committee to help make it a safer road environment for all users and it is part of recently undertaken roadway improvements to improve the streetscape along Varley Street, including:

  • suburb entry statements (artist impressions shown below);
  • additional tree islands and street tree plantings;
  • kerbside shared path on eastern side;
  • installation of on-road cycle lanes either side of the traffic lanes;
  • bus stop relocations; and a
  • new pedestrian zebra crossing opposite the shopping centre, north of Daisy Street.

The Road Safety Traffic and Transport Advisory Committee consists of road safety representatives from Council, Qld Police, the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Translink.

Council is requesting your support regarding not parking vehicles or trailers over the shared path that runs alongside the eastern side of Varley Street, between the kerb and the recently line-marked parallel car parking bays.

Like the path on the western side of the road, this 2 metre wide pathway provides a sealed area that cyclists and pedestrians can utilise and it needs to be kept clear to allow for this use.

Council has designed landscaped entry statements for the southern entry to the suburb and for the Buckley Street / Varley Street intersection.

The first entry statement is to be located just prior to the first houses at the southern entrance to the suburb (near the current 60km/h speed limit sign on the western side of Varley Street). It will consist of a new mounded garden bed, as well as tree plantings to complement those recently planted along Varley Street. A new ‘Welcome to Yorkeys Knob’ sign will be installed and situated within the garden bed.

The second entry statement is at the intersection of Buckley Street and Varley Street and is designed to provide a visual feature for cruise ship visitors entering Yorkeys Knob from the marina. It will consist of a series of mounded garden beds around the intersection along with new kerb and channel on both sides of Buckley Street (extending from the intersection back to the western end of property no. 7 Buckley Street). Other works will include installing three new banner poles in the garden bed on the eastern side of Varley Street, as well as relocating a section of footpath on Buckley Street closer towards the property boundaries.

Works are underway on the Buckley Street entry statement, with works expected to start on the first entry statement to the suburb late November 2017.

Concept plans and images are shown below.

The speed limit on Varley Street will also be reduced to 50km/h. This will extend from the entry into the suburb, from the first entry statement all the way through to Sims Esplanade.

The following maintenance and improvement works are programmed for Varley Street, between Antonetta and Buckley Streets, to help address safety issues and improve the streetscape:

  • Introduction of a kerbside shared path on the eastern side of the road and formalisation of parallel car parking (similar to the present arrangement on the western side);
  • Installation of additional treed islands on the eastern side of the road in front of 412, 422, 430, 434, cnr Daisy, 500, 530/532, 536, 538, 542, 546 and in front of  469/471 on the western side generally to improve the streetscape and uniformity along the road;
  • Planting of new street trees on the eastern verge south of Nancy Close as you enter the suburb;
  • Weeding and mulching of existing street trees;
  • Replacement of line marking  including installation of on-road cycle lanes either side of the traffic lanes;
  • Removal of the painted zebra crossing immediately south of Rhonda Street – it will however remain a school crossing point and manned with school crossing supervisors during before and after school time periods;
  • Installation of a new pedestrian zebra crossing opposite the shopping centre, north of Daisy Street,  with appropriate street lighting;
  • Relocating the bus stop outside properties 416 to 420, further south to opposite the bus stop outside property no. 399. A concrete boarding platform and access ramp will be installed at this existing stop and for the relocated eastern stop the road shoulder will be realigned to accommodate an off-road bus pull-in bay complete with concrete boarding platform and bus shelter.

Works are programmed to start late June and are estimated to take approximately 12 weeks to complete, weather permitting. A plan showing the changes is available in the For Download section below.

Council is also designing landscaped entry statements for the Buckley Street and southern suburb entry points and these projects are expected to start later this year. A concept image for the main entrance statement to the suburb is shown below.
