Tree removal – Munro St, Babinda

  • Suburb: Babinda
  • Work period (anticipated): 17/05/2019 to 31/05/2019
  • Description: Recommended removal of diseased fig tree
  • Location: Munro Street
  • Status: Closed

Removal of a fig tree in Munro Street in Babinda is recommended as it is diseased with no potential for recovery or improvement.

This tree is located in a centre traffic island near property number 27 Munro St.

This tree is infected with a pathogenic fungus (Phellinus noxius) with brown mycelial crust forming on the roots and the trunk of tree. This disease colonises roots and degrades root tissue cutting off water and nutrient flow. Above ground symptoms are usually not seen until extensive root damage has occurred. Thinning and wilting of its leaves is another indicator of the entire root system affected by the disease.

The disease is untreatable and will stay viable in the ground for many years. It is also spread by root contact meaning that the other close by fig trees are likely to be infected but at an earlier stage of infection.

Removal of the tree is therefore recommended with the site replanted with a Phellinus-resistant species.
