Cairns Regional Council wishes to advise that works have been programmed to start on the parking improvement works on Minnie Street, between Sheridan St and Lake St. As advised earlier this year, works will involve fomalising the kerbside parking bays and introducing centre median parking.
Works will start in Block 1 (Sheridan to Grafton) from Monday 12 November 2018.
Block 1: Minnie St – Sheridan St to Grafton St
Several changes have been made to the original plans that were circulated, including: the parking bays will now be 90° bays, not 60° bays and changes will be made to the location of ‘CRC vehicle parks’ for accessibility; and bike lanes will be installed. An additional 33 car parking spaces will be gained in this block of Minnie St.
Block 2: Minnie St – Grafton St to Lake St
Several changes have been made to the southern side kerbside parking bays, which will be 90° bays, not 45° bays; one additional street tree and palm will be planted on the northern side of the block; and bike lanes will be installed. These changes will result in an additional 14 car parking spaces being created.
Works on Block 1 and 2 are expected to be complete by mid-December; works will then progress on the third block, from Lake St to Abbott St.
Block 3: Minnie St – Lake St to Abbott St
Since the consultation phase, several changes have been made to the plans, including: on the north-western corner (outside No. 4 Minnie St), there will be 2 parallel bays and an additional tree planted. The parking bays will also be 90° parking bays, not 60° as originally planned. Introducing these changes will result in an additional 39 parking bays.
In total, across the 3 blocks of Minnie St, from Sheridan St to Abbott St, a total of 86 additional parking bays will be created.
While works are underway, noise, dust and lane closures are expected and it will also be necessary to temporarily close car parking bays. Every effort will be made to reduce these disruptions during this time and we thank you for your patience and cooperation. Weather permitting, it is expected to take around 6-8 weeks to complete all works.
Several street trees will be removed as a result of these works. Wherever possible, replanting will occur to offset any removals. Signs will be placed on trees to be removed for identification.
Ergon will be on site from 22 November, to relocate and install all the poles for the three blocks. The Ergon works will take approx. one week to complete.
