Cairns Esplanade - Erosion Protection

  • Suburb: Cairns City
  • Work period (anticipated): 27/04/2020 to 16/06/2020
  • Description: Erosion Protection Works
  • Likely impacts: Noise; Dust; Traffic Control
  • Location: Cairns Esplanade foreshore
  • Status: Closed

Erosion protection works will be underway on the Cairns Esplanade foreshore, adjacent to the Hospital precinct, from Monday 27 April 2020.

Past tidal activities has caused erosion to this section of the foreshore and to address this the existing rock erosion protection wall will be extended approximately 120m north.

Irrigation systems will also be installed to promote vegetation growth.

Rock for the wall will be transported to site as required with the stockpile being kept to a minimum.  Traffic management will be in place to assist with these planned activities.

The intention of the southern portion of works is to protect trees that are currently being undermined by erosion along the foreshore.  No vegetation removal will be required however some trimming of the trees may be necessary to assist the works.

There will be a need to restrict access around the rock wall site therefore pedestrian and cyclist detours will be in place north of the Beach Volleyball Court.

Please observe and obey traffic controllers and signage advising the changes, and follow detours as sign posted.

During works there may be disruptions such as noise and dust, however, this will be kept to a minimum.

Council apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciates your patience during these necessary improvement works. All works are expected to be complete by 31 May 2020.
