Cairns Regional Council is only responsible for maintenance and repairs of water systems from the water meter point (see image above, left section). Cairns Regional Council undertakes potential temporary repair on the property side of the meter at some addresses. Repairs are done in good faith as a customer service.
Should a property receive a Notification of Temporary Repairs Card, the property owner is responsible to have a private licenced plumber check the works and carry out any further repairs as necessary, at their own cost. Cairns Regional Council takes no responsibility for prior or any further loss or damage on the property side of the service due to these repairs.
As the property owner, you are responsible for maintaining all the water and wastewater pipes on your property (see image above, right section). In other words, everything on your side of the water meter. This includes the cost of any repairs to, as well as any damaged caused by, the pipes on your property.
Due to the extent and age of our wastewater network, there are several different connection types which will determine where the responsibility lies with the property owner for maintaining wastewater pipes.
