Street lights and traffic signals

Council is responsible for lighting in public spaces including road reserves and parks.

Street lights

There are over 16,000 street lights across the Cairns region. Lights on residential streets are owned and maintained by Ergon Energy. To report faulty or damaged street lighting in residential areas, contact Ergon Energy on 13 10 46.

Street lighting on highways is the responsibility of the Queensland Government's Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR). To report faulty lighting on highways or to request new highway lighting, contact DTMR on 13 19 40.

To request new street lighting on Council-controlled roads or to report damaged heritage-design street lights or damaged lights in parks or on jetties, call Council on 1300 69 22 47 or make an online customer request.

Traffic signals

Across Cairns, there are more than 50 signalised intersections under the central control of a fully integrated Intelligent Transport System known as STREAMS. These signalled intersections are maintained by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The STREAMS system coordinates traffic signals, detects and reports faults (eg. blown traffic signal lamps) and monitors traffic volume data for performance monitoring.

To report faults, contact DTMR's Traffic Signals Fault Line 13 19 40 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

Council works with DTMR to assess the need for any new traffic signals according to traffic volumes and other relevant factors.
