Cultural Collective: Looking Forward, Looking Back - Selected works from the Kenny Bedford Collection, curated by Brian Robinson
Wed 31 May - Wed 19 Jul
National Reconciliation Week this year commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and the 25th anniversary of the Mabo Decision.
For 25 years, Torres Strait Islander, Kenny Bedford has been collecting the art of his people. Comprising paintings, prints and sculpture by senior, mid-career and emerging Torres Strait Islander artists, his collection plots the development of a unique art movement that combines new forms with traditional practice, creation mythology, colonisation, Christianity and the maintenance of Culture.
Torres Strait Islanders stand strong in a contemporary era of globalisation and internationalism, maintaining a culture that has the strength and ability to appropriate and adapt to external influences, to form a tradition that is essentially Torres Strait.
This exhibition was officially launched on 31 May and will extend through NAIDOC Week (2-9 July) and the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (14-16 July).
