History behind the name
Syd Whelan was born in Cooktown in 1889 and was a prominent figure in Edmonton community life for much of the twentieth century. He served with the AIF in France in World War 1, returning to work as a plumber in the Hambledon sugar mill and served out his working life as the town postman. Forever a bachelor he died in Cairns in 1976 a loyal and sincere friend to many.
