Cemetery search map not working
We are having technical issues with our cemetery search. You can still search our Cemetery database to find a burial site however the map functionality which helps pin-point where the burial site is, is not working.
We apologise for the inconvenience and are working to resolve this as soon as possible.
Council manages five cemeteries that provide venues for burials and memorials for ashes:
- Babinda, Bruce Highway/Nelson Rd, Babinda
- Cairns (Martyn St Cemetery), corner Martyn and Anderson streets, Manunda
- Forest View, corner Hardy and Foster roads, Mount Sheridan
- Gordonvale, corner Highleigh and Maher roads, Gordonvale
- McLeod Street Pioneer Cemetery, McLeod Street, Cairns
The style and presentation of our cemeteries reflects our north Queensland culture and heritage and our respect and dignity for family and friends who have passed on. Many of our cemeteries are located alongside waterways and feature tree-lined avenues, large open fields, war memorial gardens and walkways. Please note that dogs are prohibited at our cemeteries.
The first burial in Cairns took place on 16 December 1887 at the McLeod Street Cemetery. There was 15 burials that year growing to around 400 burials annually in the Cairns area.
Arranging a funeral
Arranging a funeral service can be a difficult experience for many people. You should engage a Funeral Director to arrange all aspects of the funeral including burial and cremation options. The Funeral Director will make the necessary arrangements with Council on your behalf.
Please see the local telephone directory for a list of local funeral directors.
Reserving a site
Purchasing a grave site in advance allows you to select a site of your own choice. It means your family won't have to make this decision at an extremely emotional time and ensures your wishes are carried out.
Reserving also secures the site costs at today's prices. Please note an internment fee is payable at the time of a funeral.
If you would like to pre-purchase (reserve) a site please contact Council on 1300 69 22 47 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
