Sustainable home inspiration will be on show this weekend, as eight properties in and around Cairns open their doors to the public for Sustainable House Day.
With the aim of showcasing sustainable design elements, the day encourages homeowners to share their success stories with others.
“Many people are looking for ways to make their homes more energy efficient and save money in the process,” Mayor Bob Manning said.
“This Sunday (16 September), property owners are inviting others to have a look at how they’ve achieved this.”
A mixture of property types are being showcased in the Cairns region. These include brand new houses, family homes, battery solar power systems, student housing and community gardens.
“This year’s offerings include James Cook University’s John Grey Hall of Residence and MiHaven’s Student Living,” Cr Manning said. “These projects use sustainable design and materials and feature communal-style accommodation with shared living spaces and access to pool cars and bike share.”
Cr Manning said there was a trend toward sustainable living among building designers, architects and builders.
“Sustainable House Day is a great opportunity to tap into local knowledge and spend some time touring some of the region’s most progressive properties.”
Council encourages sustainable design through its Cool Homes Guide, which will be available to pick up on Sunday at participating properties.
“The guide is a great resource to help you live cooler and save on your energy bills,” Cr Manning said.
Participating properties will be open to the public at various times throughout the day and there is no admission cost. Cairns Regional Council supports the Alternative Technology Associations nationwide Sustainable House Day to help promote the benefits of sustainable living.
