Local cultural groups will serve up haggis, cannoli, and Pacific fare with a side of an Irish jig to celebrate the 2017 Rugby League World Cup in Cairns.

Cairns Regional Council will host a 2017 RLWC Fan Zone featuring live broadcast of games on the big screen at the Cairns Esplanade for three consecutive weekends, starting with the opening blockbuster match between Australia and England on Friday, 27 October.

For the opening match members of the Italian, Irish and Scottish community will showcase the tastes, sounds and sights of their nations from 4pm through to kick-off of the Australia versus England stoush at approximately 7pm.

The following weekend on Saturday, November 4 the Pacific nations will take charge from midday, with the Samoan and Tongan communities serving up Polynesian delights when their respective teams take the field.

Mayor Bob Manning said the 2017 RLWC Fan Zone was an opportunity for the countries playing in Cairns to be showcased to the wider community and to build the excitement of the 2017 RLWC.

“We are excited to host three games here in Cairns, including the double-header of Ireland versus Italy and Scotland versus Tonga at Barlow Park on October 29,” Cr Manning said.

“We welcome fans to come down to the Esplanade, chill on a bean bag, deck chair or bring a picnic rug and be part of the live event atmosphere over the three weekends of the tournament.

“This is a great opportunity to welcome visitors from these five nations who will play fixtures in Cairns during the 2017 Rugby League World Cup and also an opportunity to celebrate the diverse community we have in Cairns.”

The 2017 Rugby League World Cup Fan Zone will be located on the Western Events Lawn at the Cairns Esplanade (near the Lagoon), on the following dates: Friday, 27 October – Sunday, 29 October; Friday, 3 November – Sunday, 5; and Friday, 10 November – Sunday, 12 November.
