Cairns Multicultural Month is being celebrated during August with a variety of events that highlight the region’s rich cultural diversity.

Cairns Regional Council provided Community Services Grants for community groups and organisations to produce a program of diverse events reflecting the theme ‘Move, Connect, Speak, Grow’.

Mayor Bob Manning said Cairns welcomed around 1300 new Australian Citizens into the community each year.

“We are always inspired by the truly amazing people who come to our region from across the globe and proudly make Cairns their home,” he said.

“We are lucky to live in a region enriched by the contribution and talents of people from all corners of the world. Our culturally diverse population drives many economic and social benefits and creates our vibrant community.”

The Multicultural Month celebrations embrace common values through the sharing of knowledge, tradition, food, music, sport and art. The program started last weekend with the Friendship Soccer Games at Mount Sheridan. This weekend, the Indonesian Cultural Festival (Saturday) and Gimuy Fish Festival (Sunday) will bring the community together at Fogarty Park.

“In particular, the Indonesian Cultural Festival gives our community the chance to show our support for those affected by the recent earthquakes in Lombok.”

Later this month, the CARMA Multicultural Festival, Resonance Art Ensemble, Cairns European Migrant Centre Memorial Opening, Cairns Festival Grand Parade and Fireworks and Pot Luck picnic will further celebrate the diversity of the Cairns community.

“Everyone is encouraged to enjoy the events of Cairns Multicultural Month and to support our local multicultural communities, organisations and artists,” Cr Manning said.

“Above all, Cairns Multicultural Month acknowledges that while we may come from different places and cultures, we all contribute to making Cairns a wonderful place to live – as evidenced by these fantastic community events.”
