Council will double its free green waste disposal periods this year, but discontinue its shredded green waste giveaways.
It has been identified that the free shredded green waste may contain a range of restricted matter, such as invasive plants and animals, which could pose a significant biosecurity risk to the environment in the Cairns Regional Council area.
The termination of free shredded green waste will remove the potential biosecurity risks.
In order to maintain current service levels, the two annual shredded green waste giveaways will be replaced with additional free green waste periods.
Free green waste periods will be staged quarterly each year, for a length of nine days each, covering two weekends each.
The disposed green waste will be collected by contractors, who will turn it into a mulch product.
