Final milestone achieved for new arts centre

Cairns Performing Arts Centre has achieved its final milestone as finishing touches are placed ahead of the gala opening on Saturday 15 December 2018.

Construction has wrapped up on the state-of-the-art building and the Certificate of Classification – formally approving all works – has now been received by Council.

“The building has been handed over to Council to complete the fitout, and we have received the Certificate of Classification from our building certifier,” Mayor Bob Manning said.

“That means that all elements of the building have been checked and approved and it is ready for use.

“Right now, we’re in the process of getting things perfect for opening night,” Cr Manning said. “A lot of work goes into getting the lighting arrangement and sound balance just right and making sure all the little details are in place.

“The last of the fixtures and furnishings are going in – we’re really on the home stretch now.”

Official advice received from QFES states that all building materials are compliant with fire safety requirements, pending some additional works, and this has allowed the issue of the Certificate of Classification for the building.

Further works include the installation of additional smoke detectors and sprinklers inside wall cavities and creating extra fire breaks in the existing fire-resistant external cladding.

The fire breaks will consist of vertical strips of specified non-combustible cladding and insulation installed on the sides of the building. The specified non-combustible products are the same as those used on the lower level of the building and above all egress points.

In the meantime, additional measures will be implemented as per the advice from QFES. This includes the presence of additional ushers with fire warden training and external security staff on site during performances, CCTV monitoring and the provision of alternate exit paths.

The gala opening will be held on Saturday 15 December, providing a showcase of local talent on stage in the main auditorium.

To celebrate, a free concert will be held in Munro Martin Parklands, coinciding with the CPAC opening event.

Jazz Under the Jade Vines will start at 4pm, accompanied by a Meet Eat Repeat event in Florence Street, which will be closed to traffic for the event. All are welcome to attend.
