Safety drives carpark upgrade

Lake St carpark facadeA multi-million-dollar revamp of the Lake Street carpark will start next month, with an attractive, safer and more accessible facility set to open by the end of this year.

The Cairns CBD’s only public multi-storey carpark will undergo a $5.9 million transformation that includes CCTV and security features, improved lighting, all-abilities access and a rainforest-inspired fa├žade.

“The front of the building will be overhauled to complement the Lake St Carpark front viewtropical amenity created in Lake Street through the City Centre Alive project,” Mayor Bob Manning said.

“We want the city centre to be an attractive, inviting and – most importantly – safe place for people to visit.

“This carpark is an important piece of CBD infrastructure and we want people to feel safe and comfortable using it.”

The upgrade project was put to tender in March, following an announcement that the Queensland Government would provide a $2.94 million grant toward the project.

The major construction contract was today awarded to Hutchinson Builders at a cost of about $4.1 million.

In preparation for the major works, the carpark will close on Tuesday 13 June for a period of approximately six months, weather permitting.

During this time, there will be no vehicular access from Abbott Street to the adjacent City Library carpark or to the drive-through return facility. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

“We did originally look at keeping the carpark partially open during the works but it became apparent that this would present a public safety risk and would drag out the works over a longer period of time,” Cr Manning said.

“We wanted to get this upgrade done as quickly and as safely as possible, so the decision had to be made to close the carpark.

Alternative parking arrangements have been made to cater for regular users of the carpark.

“We’ve made an arrangement with Cairns Central for permit holders to access their carpark for the first few weeks of the works,” he said. “After that, parking will be provided at the Hartley Street carpark until the facility reopens at the end of the year.

“Once completed, the Lake Street Carpark will provide safe and accessible parking around the clock.”
