Council will apply for more than $500,000 in funding to upgrade bus shelters and improve all abilities accessibility.

Of the 334 bus stops in the Cairns Regional Council local government about 84 per cent have been made Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) compliant over the past six years.

The remaining bus stops are required to be made DDA complaint by December 2022.

To aid in this, Council will apply for the following funding:

  • $222,600 under the Passenger Transport Accessible Infrastructure Program for the upgrade of 21 bus stop sites to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
  • $304,000 under the Bus Stop Shelter Program for the replacement/installation of shelters at 16 bus stop sites.
