Cairns Regional Council wishes to advise that bridge replacement works for Cook Street have been postponed..
While the bridge is an aging structure that may require maintenance works over time, it is still in a suitable condition to operate as a safe transport link.
Regular inspections and monitoring of the structure will be undertaken and there will be restrictions on excess mass vehicles from using the bridge. Please note that vehicles operating under regulation loads and dimensions (e.g. 42.5 tonne semi-trailer), and all other light and commercial vehicles can still use the bridge without restriction.
The Cook Street bridge, situated over Smiths Creek west of Fearnley Street, is over 50 years old and is due for replacement.
Bridge replacement works are programmed to occur in 2020 and they will take around 4 to 6 months to complete.
During works, a full road closure of Cook Street will be required for an estimated three months, weather permitting.
As shown in the Plan ( PDF, 0.83 MB ), detours during this time will be via Aumuller St > Comport St > Draper St.
The existing bridge will be replaced with a structure that is capable of providing for the needs of projected future use.
Further advice will be issued once construction timeframes have been confirmed.
