Our Cairns Coast: adapting for the future

  • Description: The "Our Cairns Coast: Adapting for the future” project will help us understand what long-term coastal changes mean for our community, our businesses and our infrastructure, and to plan for resilience.
  • Status: Open
  • Consultation period: 12:00am 07/03/2019 to 12:00am 30/06/2019

Council is working with the Queensland Government to plan for and respond to current and future coastal changes from erosion, storm tide inundation and sea level rise.

This project, “Our Cairns Coast: Adapting for the future”, will help us understand what long-term coastal changes mean for our community, our businesses and our infrastructure, and to plan for resilience.

Council has secured funding under the Queensland Government’s QCoast2100 program to prepare a strategy to adapt to future coastal changes and risks from now until 2100.  Cairns is one of 31 coastal councils working through the QCoast2100 program. The program addresses erosion, storm tide inundation and sea level rise.

A consultant team with the technical expertise has been engaged to assist, and the project will be supported by subject matter experts from inside and outside Council, as well as community contributions.

The 8-phase multi-year project aims to:

  • better understand the coastal changes (hazards) we can expect to see, what areas are at risk and what this means for our community, our businesses and our infrastructure;
  • plan for resilience by identifying what actions we need to take – and when – to avoid or reduce these impacts;
  • take a coordinated approach to coastal planning and adaptation across the region.

Survey

We know that our community values the Cairns coast, and we invite residents and business operators to tell us what it means to them. We will use your feedback to help identify ways to reduce coastal impacts on these important areas.

Take our anonymous, online survey to tell us:

  • how you use the beaches and foreshores, and
  • what you value about our Cairns coast.

The survey will be open for responses from 7 March to 30 June 2019.
