A detention basin is proposed for Jalarra Park in Stratford to help mitigate flooding to downstream properties.
Community consultation undertaken for the Mt Whitfield drainage management plan identified this site for stormwater detention to assist in reducing downstream property flooding and flooding over Kamerunga Road.
As shown on the location plan ( PDF, 0.36 MB ), the detention basin is proposed to be located near Stratford Chase and Wilunga Street.
It would incorporate the natural creek area in the lower section of the park and feature new rocked spillways and a low flow pipe.
For the majority of the time, it would be a grassed depression suitable for general open parkland recreation uses, including park seating. A new footpath connection to the playground would also be introduced.
During the wet season, the detention basin is designed to temporarily detain around 3,600m3 of flood water resulting in a lower peak volume of water flow downstream.
To construct the basin, some vegetation removal would be required and this would be minimised as much as possible. New trees would also be planted once the project is complete. Please note that the species shown on the concept plan are suggestions only.
