Closures and service changes - Council facilities

In accordance with Stage 1 of the Queensland Government's road map for easing COVID-19 restrictions, a number of Council facilities and venues will re-open from 16 May 2020.

The status listed below will remain in effect until further notice.  Users should adhere to physical distancing measures (1 person per 4 square metres), good hygiene practices, be vigilant of 10-person limits and follow the direction of any signage.

Open facilities

  • Cairns Libraries
  • Public pools at Gordonvale, Smithfield, Tobruk and Woree*
  • Barlow Park (casual athletics only)
  • Playgrounds (including Muddy's, Fun Ship and Centenary Lakes Nature Play), skate parks and bump tracks
  • BBQs - due to large number of sites, this will be a staged roll-out over the weekend 16-17 May
  • Outdoor gyms, tennis courts and public basketball courts
  • Lake Morris recreation area
  • Transfer stations: Open and operating as usual. See transfer station locations and operating hours.
  • Buy Back Shop
  • Animal pound
  • Public toilets

Cairns Esplanade OPEN WITH RESTRICTIONS

All public facilities on the Cairns Esplanade (except for the Lagoon and amenities block) are OPEN.

This includes playgrounds, barbecues, green gym exercise equipment and the Esplanade Activity Precinct (skate park, bouldering park, multi-purpose court and volleyball courts).

Social distancing rules apply: maximum 20 people in a group.

  • Lagoon - CLOSED for maintenance until mid-June 2020
Cairns Libraries OPEN WITH RESTRICTIONS
  • Open for borrowing only.
  • 20-person limit applies.
  • Residents are encouraged to reserve a book online and use the self-checkout at the branch.
Cairns Performing Arts Centre CLOSED All events scheduled prior to 31 May 2020 have been cancelled. A full refund will be provided to the original ticket holder. There is no need to contact Ticketlink at this time, ticket holders are asked to be patient.

Council is accepting hall hire bookings as follows:

  • From 1 June 2020, bookings for non-contact outdoor activities with a maximum of 20 people
  • From 10 July 2020, bookings for up to 100 people, subject to Stage 3 of eased restrictions.

  • Red Arrow is now a one-way circuit (effective 31 March 2020). Entry from western side, behind Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre.
