Cairns Regional Council was named joint winner of the Local Government Resilience category in the 2014 Resilient Australia Awards. The win was shared with the Sydney Coastal Council Group and School of Geo Sciences University of Sydney.
The Resilient Australia Awards, delivered by the Australian Government, recognise and promote projects and initiatives supporting communities to be better prepared and more disaster resilient.
The win recognised the amount of research, knowledge and effort that Cairns Regional Council put into helping the broader community plan for disaster events such as cyclones.
Council works in partnership with a variety of community organisations to reach vulnerable residents, and has produced a range of resources include Auslan-accredited videos, multi-lingual radio warning messages and information brochure translations, a Braille guide to cyclone preparedness and an easy-read brochure for people with communication difficulties.
The national award follows Council's success at the Queensland component of the Resilient Australia Awards in October 2014.
A range of disaster preparation resources is available via Council's website www.cairns.qld.gov.au/disaster.
