Council's catchy campaign headlined by an elected representative moonlighting as a rap artist has won best Social Media Campaign at the 2019 Queensland Local Government Communication Awards.
Think Before You Flush is social media campaign featuring a 45-second rap song and video, written and produced by Cairns Regional Council staff, to educate people on what not to flush down the toilet.
Councillor Brett Olds adopted the persona of DJ Phatberg to rap the tune. The name comes from fatberg – a large mass of solid waste in a sewerage system.
Production of the rap video was an unconventional way to spread an important message.
The social media campaign, launched on 1 August 2019 on Facebook, received 160 comments; 160 shares; reached more than 56,200 people; and had 7300 engagements.
The rap and video was produced by Council: lyrics by former media co-ordinator Lea Guy, recording by digital media officer Norbert Kraus; and direction by account manager Fiona Dix.
In a family effort, Cr Olds’ son played the beats on the drums, and his three other children joined in with additional backing vocals.
