A complex communications project by Cairns Regional Council was highly commended at the 2018 Resilience Awards.
Held annually by the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience, the Resilience Awards recognise projects across number of categories including local government.
2018 was the fourth consecutive year in which Cairns Regional Council was recognised for its resilience development, receiving a Highly Commended award for its complex communications project.
Called "Don’t You Speak English?", the project is an ongoing one focused on people for whom English is not a first language including CALD communities and those with a hearing, vision or comprehension challenge.
The project encompasses direct engagement with these communities using the most relevant communication vectors, work with Cairns Community Radio and a critical assessment of warning methods to ensure everyone has equal access to disaster information.
