Total Projects Group Architects's “humble and respectful restoration” of the Cairns School of Arts building has been honoured at the architecture industry's 2017 local and state awards.
The project claimed the Don Roderick Award for Heritage at the 2017 Queensland State Architecture Awards, and progresses to the national awards later in the year.
The state award follows an earlier win, with the project receiving the Eddie Oribin Award for Building of the Year in the 2017 Far North Queensland Architecture Awards. The category is named in honour of the late Edwin “Eddie” Oribin, one of Queensland’s most innovative draftsmen.
The $8.69 million refurbishment of the heritage listed building has provided two full floors plus a mezzanine level to be used by the Cairns Historical Society.
The upgrade restored and highlighted key aesthetic characteristics of the building, which was constructed over different historical eras (1907, 1932, 1939 and 2016).
