Engagement opportunity - understanding coastal hazards and assessing the risks
The Council will be holding forums between May and June 2020 with interested community members in the Northern, Central and Southern areas of Cairns to give residents a chance to have their say on the identified coastal hazards, impacted assets and the risks.

Coastal changes will continue to affect a number of locations and communities throughout the Cairns region, and we want to work with you to develop a plan that will make us all ‘future ready’.
In 2019 we talked with you about the areas of the coast you value – places of importance, how areas are used and what changes you have already experienced.
Throughout the coming phases of the Our Cairns Coast project, there will be opportunities for you to tell us:
- your thoughts about areas impacted and how 'at-risk' they are (May to June 2020)
- your ideas about adaptation options to reduce the impacts (July to August 2020)
- comments on the draft strategy (September 2020)
Community engagement findings 2019 - Coastal values
The first round of engagement looked at identifying coastal values and identifying current coastal changes in Cairns. A variety of consultation methods were utilised including online media, a survey, community displays and pop up stalls at the ECOFiesta and local markets. We also talked to key stakeholder groups and individual businesses with assets that may be affected.
Overall, the findings of the survey and engagement revealed that the community valued the natural coastal environment, habitat and wildlife most highly.
This was reflected in an interactive sand bucket voting exercise held throughout the region at various events.
